Eleanor Gunning - Class of 1975
" What I miss the most about about Muckross is the sense of ‘We’re all in this together” between staff and senior pupils, and the openness to suggestions from the pupils. I asked if I could be scheduled with some lower year group to take extra P.E. as I was hell bent on being a PE teacher.
The principal, Sr. Dominico, kindly enabled me to give up an exam subject (art) even before Inter Cert and to join in with other classes. I miss the feeling then of women finding their way in many sports. I am particularly grateful for Sr. Carmel’s encouragement and mentoring of the basketball teams in what will always be regarded as a top hockey school. "
" The anticipated arrival of the first vending machine is one of my favourite Muckross memories. (Hot drinks), the queues for it and consternation when it ran out or broke down.
Another is the neighbour’s dog regularly running off with the match ball, madly pursued by two full hockey teams. "
What are you up to now?
" Recently retired from teaching (Primary and computers) with plans for connecting more with family and friends, and getting involved in more activities - especially golf and lots of travel. Looking forward to several ‘Trips of a lifetime'. Living in Dublin in a sports mad house, married to Vivian Ruddy (Mayo for Sam!) and I have three grown up children. Rachel and Ciara play Gaelic Football on the Dublin team and son Hugh is also involved in sports "
Advice for your 18 year old self:
" Go for it. If you want something make plans and if anything blocks the way look for alternative ways to achieve your goals. “There is more than one way to skin a cat. “
And embrace team spirit, be it colleagues, family or sports teams. You will have many life experiences where you’ll need strong people to have your back and you theirs."
Fun fact: Eleanor is still playing basketball in Dublin leagues and has done for almost 50 consecutive years. She also travels to play in Masters’ tournaments, around Ireland and abroad!
